Odisha CM Increases Monthly Allowance for Folk Artists Under Kalakar Sahayata Yojana

Allowance hike announced at State-level Pala Conference; over 47,000 artists to benefit across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: In a major relief for folk and traditional artists, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday announced an increase in the monthly allowance provided under the Mukhyamantri Kalakar Sahayata Yojana. The announcement was made during the 48th State-level Pala Conference held at Park Lane in Keonjhar district.

The decision aims to provide stronger financial support to artists who have dedicated their lives to preserving Odisha’s rich cultural heritage. The revised allowance structure will come into effect as the state prepares to enter the new year, bringing renewed hope to thousands of artist families.

Under the updated scheme, artists between the ages of 40 and 80 years will now receive a monthly allowance of ₹3,000, an increase from the earlier ₹2,000. For senior artists aged above 80 years, the monthly assistance has been raised to ₹3,500 from ₹2,500.

The Chief Minister said the enhancement reflects the government’s respect and gratitude toward artists who continue to safeguard and promote Odia traditions through folk performances, music, storytelling, and cultural expressions.

Nearly 48,000 Artists to Benefit

According to official estimates, the revised allowance will benefit 47,704 artists across Odisha. Many of them depend on traditional art forms such as Pala, Daskathia, Gotipua, and folk music for their livelihood.

The increased financial support is expected to help artists meet basic living expenses and reduce economic uncertainty, especially for elderly performers who may no longer be actively performing.

Government’s Commitment to Cultural Preservation

Addressing the gathering at the Pala Conference, CM Majhi said folk artists are the custodians of Odisha’s cultural identity. He emphasized that protecting and supporting them is not just a welfare measure, but a responsibility toward preserving the state’s heritage.

He added that schemes like the Mukhyamantri Kalakar Sahayata Yojana play a crucial role in ensuring dignity and social security for artists who often work outside the formal economic system.

Special Focus on Senior Artists

The enhanced allowance for artists above 80 years highlights the government’s focus on elderly cultural practitioners who may face health and mobility challenges. The increased financial aid is intended to provide them with a stable income and improved quality of life.

Officials said the scheme will continue to evolve with further steps to identify and support deserving artists across rural and urban areas.

Encouraging the Next Generation of Folk Artists

Cultural experts believe that sustained government support will also encourage younger generations to take up traditional art forms. Financial stability for senior artists helps keep folk traditions alive and inspires youth to learn and perform these age-old practices.

The Pala Conference itself showcased performances from across the state, underlining the continued relevance of folk art in modern Odisha.

A Positive Step for Odisha’s Cultural Community

The allowance hike under the Mukhyamantri Kalakar Sahayata Yojana marks a significant policy move in favor of Odisha’s folk artists. With nearly 48,000 beneficiaries, the decision strengthens the social security net for the traditional art community and reinforces the state’s commitment to cultural preservation.

As Odisha steps into 2026, the announcement stands as a strong signal that art, culture, and artists remain central to the state’s development vision.
