Odisha Moves Ahead with Science City Project in Bhubaneswar

State eyes major boost to scientific learning, youth innovation, and regional research capacity

Bhubaneswar: In a major push to strengthen scientific education and innovation in Eastern India, the Odisha government is set to establish a state-of-the-art Science City in Bhubaneswar. Envisioned across 100 acres, the project aims to become a vibrant hub of science learning, research, and creativity—especially for young students who will gain hands-on exposure to modern scientific concepts and technologies.

The government has initiated groundwork to identify the most suitable location for the ambitious project. Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare and Science & Technology Minister Krushna Chandra Patra personally reviewed two potential sites—Haripur and Bhagabatipur mouzas under Bhubaneswar tehsil. Accompanied by departmental officials, Minister Patra inspected the areas and discussed their accessibility, terrain, and future expansion potential. Based on these assessments, one site will soon be finalised for construction.

During the evaluation, Bhubaneswar Sub-Collector Dr. Manoranjan Sahu and Bhubaneswar Tehsildar presented detailed maps and provided insights into the land features, ensuring that both options meet the project’s infrastructural and environmental requirements. The government’s careful site selection underscores its commitment to developing the Science City as a long-term centre of excellence.

To ensure world-class standards, a high-level team led by Minister Patra earlier visited Science Cities in Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Patna. The team engaged in discussions with their managements to study architectural designs, operational models, and interactive exhibition techniques. These insights will guide Odisha in creating a modern, efficient, and impactful Science City tailored to local needs while matching national benchmarks.

The proposed Science City will house advanced science galleries, immersive interactive zones, digital learning theatres, and hands-on experiment spaces. Plans also include research facilities, innovation labs, and collaboration spaces where students, researchers, and hobby scientists can experiment and share ideas. The government believes this centre will encourage scientific curiosity, nurture young talent, and build a strong foundation for future scientific progress in the state.

Designed as a dynamic and engaging environment rather than a conventional museum, the Science City aims to spark interest in areas such as space science, robotics, environment, physics, and biotechnology. Visitors—from schoolchildren to researchers—will have access to exhibits and experiences that bring science to life.

With Odisha’s renewed focus on science, technology, and education under the state government’s vision, the Science City will serve as a major addition to Bhubaneswar’s growing reputation as a knowledge and innovation hub. Once operational, it is expected to draw students, tourists, and researchers from across the region, significantly contributing to scientific literacy and regional development.

As the government moves toward finalising the site and beginning construction, the Science City promises to become a landmark initiative—one that inspires learning, fuels innovation, and prepares the next generation of scientific thinkers in Odisha.
