Odisha Cabinet Approves Midi Electric Bus Services in Six Cities

₹9,152 crore eco-friendly transport initiative to boost urban mobility over the next decade

Bhubaneswar : In a major step towards sustainable urban transportation, the Odisha Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has approved the launch of Midi Electric Bus services across six major cities of the state. The decision aims to modernise public transport, reduce carbon emissions, and provide safer and more efficient travel options for city commuters.

Under this initiative, the state government will procure, operate, and maintain 200 Midi Electric buses on a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) basis. The project, valued at ₹9,152.56 crore, will be implemented over a period of 10 years. These electric buses will operate in Keonjhar, Baripada, Berhampur, Angul, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur, ensuring improved public transport connectivity for thousands of daily passengers in these urban areas.

According to officials, the introduction of electric buses will significantly enhance urban mobility while addressing concerns related to rising pollution and fuel dependency. By opting for electric vehicles, the state aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote clean energy usage in the transportation sector. The service is expected to benefit students, office-goers, traders, and tourists, offering a reliable and cost-effective alternative to conventional transport.

Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, while briefing the media, stated that this decision marks an important step in developing smart, inclusive, and eco-friendly cities. He added that the project will not only provide safe and convenient travel but also strengthen Odisha’s commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience.

The buses will be equipped with modern facilities such as GPS-based tracking, CCTV surveillance, panic buttons for passenger safety, and automated fare collection systems. Charging infrastructure will be set up in designated depots to ensure seamless operations. The government will also work with local urban bodies and transport corporations for smooth implementation and monitoring of services.

Officials further highlighted that the large-scale investment will generate employment opportunities in vehicle maintenance, operations, charging infrastructure, and administration, contributing to overall economic growth in the state.

With this initiative, Odisha joins the growing list of states promoting electric mobility as part of the national vision for a greener future. The project reflects the state government’s focus on sustainable urban planning, improved public infrastructure, and enhanced quality of life for citizens.
