Jindal Steel Boosts Angul Capacity with New 3 MTPA Basic Oxygen Furnace
Rs 20,000 crore expansion project positions Odisha as India’s steelmaking powerhouse
Bhubaneswar : Jindal Steel has commissioned a state-of-the-art Basic Oxygen Furnace (BoF) with a capacity of 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at its Angul plant in Odisha, marking a major milestone in the company’s ambitious expansion plan. The development, part of a Rs 20,000 crore investment, enhances the plant’s crude steel production capacity from 6 MTPA to 9 MTPA, strengthening its status as one of India’s most advanced steelmaking hubs.
The BoF, a critical unit in integrated steelmaking, operates by converting molten iron into steel using high-purity oxygen. The process not only increases production efficiency but also ensures higher quality steel. With the addition of this new furnace, Jindal Steel is well on track to scale up the Angul facility to 12 MTPA, making it one of the largest single-location steel plants in the country.
The company said the first successful tapping of steel from the new unit demonstrates the robustness of its expansion programme and underlines its long-term commitment to India’s steel sector.
Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel, expressed pride in the achievement, noting that the Angul plant represents both industrial progress and Odisha’s rising importance in India’s steel economy. “The commissioning of the new Basic Oxygen Furnace is a significant leap in our journey. By scaling Angul’s capacity to 12 MTPA, we aim to enhance India’s self-reliance in steelmaking and support the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. This project reflects our resolve to merge world-class technology with Odisha’s industrial potential,” Jindal said.
The Angul expansion is not limited to steelmaking capacity. As part of its Rs 20,000 crore investment, Jindal Steel is undertaking a series of projects to boost efficiency and integrate its supply chain. These include a new coke oven, a coal pipe conveyor, and a slurry pipeline, alongside the development of a dedicated port at Paradip and the Shreebhoomi Power Plant. Collectively, these initiatives are expected to streamline logistics, reduce costs, and ensure sustainable growth.
Officials stated that the BoF commissioning also opens opportunities for advanced product diversification, enabling Jindal Steel to meet growing demand across sectors such as infrastructure, construction, and automotive manufacturing.
Industry experts view the expansion as a transformative development for Odisha, which has steadily positioned itself as the heart of India’s steel industry. With abundant mineral reserves, strategic location, and growing infrastructure, the state is drawing large-scale investments from both domestic and international players.
The Angul facility, already the largest integrated steel plant in eastern India, is seen as a cornerstone in the state’s industrial roadmap. Once the full 12 MTPA expansion is realized, Odisha will not only boost India’s steel production but also create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, catalyzing regional development.
The global steel market is witnessing a steady rise in demand, particularly in emerging economies. India, already the world’s second-largest steel producer, is expected to play a leading role in meeting this demand. Jindal Steel’s expansion at Angul comes at a time when the government is pushing for higher domestic production to reduce imports and promote exports.
By adopting modern steelmaking technologies like the Basic Oxygen Furnace and focusing on large-scale integrated facilities, the company aims to strengthen its competitiveness in both domestic and global markets.
With this milestone, Jindal Steel has moved a step closer to its vision of making Angul a world-class steelmaking hub. The expansion aligns with the government’s National Steel Policy, which targets 300 MTPA of crude steel capacity by 2030. For Odisha, the project cements its place at the center of India’s steel growth story, promising long-term benefits for industries, workers, and communities alike.
