Jindal Steel Commissions 5 MTPA Blast Furnace at Angul, Doubling Plant Capacity

Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace-II places Odisha at the heart of India’s steelmaking future

Bhubaneswar : Jindal Steel has created a landmark in India’s steelmaking history with the commissioning of the 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace-II at its Angul facility in Odisha. The ceremonial “blow-in” was led by Chairman Naveen Jindal, cementing Angul’s position as the largest single-location steel plant in the country.

With a useful volume of 5,499 cubic metres, the Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace is not only among the largest of its kind globally but also one of the most advanced. The project reflects Jindal Steel’s efforts to combine scale with automation, a safety-first design, and sustainable operations.

“This is a proud moment for Jindal Steel and for India. By doubling Angul’s capacity to 12 MTPA, we are strengthening our global competitiveness and reaffirming our commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat. Rooted in Odisha’s culture and powered by cutting-edge technology, this furnace represents our vision to unite tradition with innovation,” Naveen Jindal said during the commissioning ceremony.

The Rs 20,000-crore investment in Angul has made this milestone possible and signals a decisive step toward Jindal Steel’s long-term growth ambitions.

The commissioning of the new blast furnace enables Jindal Steel to double steel production at Angul from 6 MTPA to 12 MTPA, transforming the facility into a powerhouse of Indian steelmaking. More importantly, Angul is being positioned as the central hub for the company’s future expansion plans.

Planned developments include a dedicated port at Paradip, which will improve logistics efficiency, alongside a slurry pipeline and a coal pipe conveyor to streamline raw material transport. The Shreebhoomi Power Plant and new coke oven facilities are also on the anvil, making Angul the cornerstone of Jindal Steel’s global growth strategy.

For Odisha, the expansion strengthens its role as a critical driver of India’s industrial economy. Already rich in mineral resources, the state has become a natural base for large-scale steel and metal projects. The Angul plant’s growth is expected to create new employment opportunities, support ancillary industries, and generate significant economic activity across the region.

Nationally, the Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace represents an alignment with India’s ambition to scale up domestic steel production in line with rising demand from infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing. The plant’s advanced design also supports India’s sustainability goals by integrating efficiency-driven systems that reduce emissions and optimise energy consumption.

Jindal Steel, part of the Naveen Jindal Group, is a diversified conglomerate with operations spanning steel, energy, and mining. The Angul expansion provides fresh momentum to its global aspirations by showcasing both capacity and capability. With world-class infrastructure and advanced technology, the company aims to be a leader not only in production volumes but also in sustainable steelmaking practices.

Industry experts note that Angul’s transformation will enhance India’s standing in global steel markets. By nearly doubling its output, Jindal Steel will contribute significantly to India’s goal of becoming a global steel powerhouse while supporting the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.

The Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace-II is more than just an industrial achievement; it is a symbol of Odisha’s rising prominence on the global steel map. With Angul serving as the nucleus of its growth plans, Jindal Steel is charting a path that blends tradition with innovation, ensuring that both Odisha and India remain at the forefront of the steelmaking industry.
