Odisha Governor Urges Citizens to Adopt Electric Vehicles for Greener Future

Calls for Solar Rooftops and Massive Plantation Drive to Curb Pollution

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati appealed to citizens, particularly in urban areas, to embrace electric vehicles (EVs) as part of a larger effort to build a sustainable and eco-friendly future for the state. He was addressing the 42nd Foundation Day celebration of the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB).

EVs as Key to Reducing Pollution

Highlighting the growing challenge of vehicular emissions in rapidly expanding cities, the governor underlined the critical role of EV adoption in reducing air pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. “Electric vehicles are not just a trend but a necessity for ensuring clean air and a healthier lifestyle in the years ahead,” he said.

The governor pointed to the Raj Bhavan’s initiative of fully transitioning its official fleet to electric vehicles, a move that has significantly lowered its carbon footprint. “This step shows that the change is possible and practical. Institutions, government departments, and individuals must follow suit to see a visible difference in our environment,” he added.

Rooftop Solar Systems Encouraged

Apart from electric mobility, Governor Kambhampati stressed the importance of adopting renewable energy solutions, particularly rooftop solar systems. He explained how such installations can help households reduce electricity bills while actively supporting clean energy goals. He also reminded citizens to take advantage of government subsidies for solar power adoption. “Rooftop solar is not only about savings but also about empowering individuals to contribute to the state’s energy independence,” he said.

Mass Plantation Drive from September 17

The governor further urged people, especially students and youth, to actively participate in the state’s plantation drive scheduled to begin on September 17. The campaign aims to plant 75 lakh saplings across Odisha as part of the state’s long-term environmental conservation strategy.

He described the initiative as a “people’s movement” where every citizen has a role to play in mitigating climate change impacts, restoring green cover, and protecting biodiversity. “When students lead such missions, they not only plant trees but also plant the seeds of responsibility and awareness for the generations to come,” he said.

A Comprehensive Approach to Sustainability

Governor Kambhampati’s call combines three major pillars of sustainability—electric mobility, renewable energy, and afforestation. By linking these initiatives, he underscored the need for collective responsibility in tackling climate change.

He also praised the Odisha State Pollution Control Board for its continued efforts in regulating industrial emissions, monitoring pollution levels, and promoting eco-friendly practices. He called upon the board to further strengthen its role in ensuring sustainable development while balancing industrial growth and environmental protection.

The governor made it clear that government policies and institutional efforts alone will not suffice unless people voluntarily adopt greener choices. “Every citizen must see themselves as stakeholders in the fight against pollution. Be it switching to EVs, installing rooftop solar panels, or planting trees, these actions together can secure a sustainable future for Odisha,” he concluded.

With this comprehensive appeal, the state is expected to see stronger momentum in EV adoption, renewable energy usage, and community-driven environmental projects in the coming months.
