CM Majhi, Union Minister Kumaraswamy Discuss Roadmap to Make Odisha a Global Steel Powerhouse

Focus on Rourkela Steel Plant Expansion, Iron Ore Supply & Centre-State Collaboration

Bhubaneswar: In a significant push to bolster Odisha’s position in India’s steel industry, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi met Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy in New Delhi on Wednesday. The two leaders held a detailed discussion on advancing key projects, unlocking new investment opportunities, and resolving bottlenecks to accelerate the growth of the steel sector in the state.

The meeting emphasized Odisha’s pivotal role in India’s steel production landscape. Union Minister Kumaraswamy acknowledged the state’s strategic importance and assured the Centre’s full support to strengthen infrastructure, investment, and employment in the steel and heavy industries sectors.

A key topic of discussion was the expansion of the Rourkela Steel Plant, a flagship facility under the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). Kumaraswamy assured CM Majhi that the Ministry would offer all necessary support to resolve challenges and enhance production capacity at the plant, with the goal of making Rourkela a world-class steel hub.

The two leaders also deliberated on the development of new iron ore mines across Odisha to ensure a steady and sustainable supply of raw materials. Kumaraswamy stressed that efficient access to iron ore is crucial not only for public enterprises like SAIL but also for private sector steel players operating in the state.

Odisha has the potential to lead India’s steel revolution, Kumaraswamy said, highlighting the Centre’s commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with the state government to ensure the sector’s rapid growth, aligned with the national vision of achieving 300 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) steel capacity by 2030.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to position Odisha as a model state for industrial growth, mineral resource development, and steel excellence, contributing to national missions like Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Viksit Bharat @2047, and PM Modi’s steel vision.

Earlier in the day, CM Majhi also met several other Union Ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Paatil, and Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Prahlad Joshi.

Taking to social media after his meeting with the Home Minister, CM Majhi wrote:
“Had a courtesy call with Hon’ble Union Home Minister Amit Shah Ji today in New Delhi. Discussed Centre-State coordination and various developmental initiatives of the State.”

These back-to-back high-level meetings reflect the Odisha government’s proactive approach to foster strong Centre-State collaboration and unlock new opportunities for infrastructure, industry, and socio-economic development across the state.
