Focus on improved connectivity, economic growth, and better passenger services
In a significant push for the state’s infrastructure development, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi. The two leaders held detailed discussions regarding the expansion and modernization of railway infrastructure across Odisha.
According to official sources, the Chief Minister underscored the need for an upgraded and well-connected rail network to accelerate Odisha’s economic progress. He highlighted that better railway connectivity is crucial for improving trade, tourism, and regional development, especially in the state’s underdeveloped and tribal-dominated areas.
The meeting focused on reviewing the status of ongoing projects and prioritizing new proposals under the Ministry of Railways. Chief Minister Majhi reportedly requested expedited approvals and funding for key railway lines, doubling and electrification projects, and the completion of delayed works that are vital for regional connectivity.
“Strengthening the railway network is essential for Odisha’s balanced growth. We are committed to ensuring that even the remotest areas benefit from improved transport services,” the CM said during the interaction, as per a statement issued by the CMO.
Discussions also included proposals for the modernization of major railway stations, introduction of new passenger trains on high-demand routes, and enhancing amenities for travelers. Special attention was given to connecting industrial hubs and ports with better rail access to promote cargo movement and employment generation.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who also hails from Odisha, assured full cooperation from the Centre and emphasized the strategic importance of Odisha in India’s overall rail network. He welcomed the state’s suggestions and expressed his ministry’s readiness to work in close coordination with the Odisha government to fast-track key projects.
This high-level meeting is seen as a positive step toward improving transportation infrastructure in Odisha, which will play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and social inclusion.
