The Odisha government has provided a financial incentive of Rs 31.10 crore to nearly 1 lakh dairy farmers associated with OMFED (Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation). The funds were transferred directly to the farmers’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring transparency and timely payment.

The incentive was given to farmers who supplied milk to OMFED between September 2024 and February 2025. This period is known as the “lean season” for milk production, as milk supply usually drops during these six months due to changes in weather and fodder availability. To support farmers during this challenging time, OMFED, with the help of the state government, offered a special incentive ranging from Rs 1 to Rs 5 per litre of milk.

Support Based on Milk Supplied
The amount each farmer received was calculated based on the volume of milk they supplied during the lean season. This move aims to encourage farmers to continue milk production throughout the year and to improve their financial condition, especially when production costs remain high despite lower output.

OMFED operates through 11 district milk cooperative societies across the state. Among them, the Cuttack District Milk Cooperative Society has the highest number of farmers – around 33,000 members. Balasore follows with approximately 18,000 dairy farmers. Other districts such as Khurda, Ganjam, and Mayurbhanj also play significant roles in milk production.

OMFED’s Managing Director, Vijay Amruta Kulange, stated that the incentive scheme has received a positive response and will continue in the next financial year as well. He further informed that the government is considering giving a year-round incentive of Rs 2 per litre to all dairy farmers supplying milk to OMFED, which would provide long-term income stability.

Boost for Rural Economy
The financial aid is a major step toward strengthening Odisha’s rural economy and supporting livestock-based livelihoods. It is also expected to motivate more farmers, especially small and marginal ones, to take up dairy farming. Besides improving the milk supply chain, the scheme helps in empowering women, as many households involve women in dairy-related activities.

With such consistent support from the government, the dairy sector in Odisha is expected to witness steady growth, ensuring better returns for farmers and quality milk products for consumers.
