Vedanta’s Sangam Project Secures Water and Livelihoods in Kalahandi

In a significant stride toward rural development and climate resilience, Vedanta Aluminium’s ‘Sangam Watershed Project’ is delivering year-round water security and improved agricultural output across 41 villages in the Lanjigarh region of Kalahandi district, Odisha.
The initiative, which leverages advanced water conservation technologies and community partnerships, currently supports irrigation across more than 3,500 acres of farmland. With enhanced groundwater recharge and expanded water storage infrastructure, the project is poised to benefit over 22,000 residents annually upon full implementation.
Over the last financial year alone, more than 2,500 villagers gained direct access to sustainable water sources through the construction of community and farm ponds. These interventions collectively added a water recharge capacity of 2.82 lakh cubic metres, bolstering both drinking water availability and agricultural resilience in this traditionally water-stressed region.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasized the broader impact of the project: “The transformation we are witnessing in Kalahandi is a testament to the power of partnership and innovation. Through the Sangam Watershed Project and our integrated development initiatives, we have enhanced water security, increased agricultural productivity, and empowered rural families with sustainable livelihoods.”
Kumar reaffirmed Vedanta’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, noting that the company is combining modern technology, community engagement, and strategic alliances to foster long-term prosperity in ecologically sensitive areas.
The Sangam project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is being recognized as a replicable model for rural transformation. It aims not only to equip communities with physical resources but also to build their resilience against environmental challenges.
