Odisha to Host Global Energy Leaders’ Summit 2025 in Puri

Event to Unite Global, National, and State Energy Stakeholders Under the Theme “Powering India: Sufficiency, Balance, Innovation”

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Energy Department has officially announced the Global Energy Leaders’ Summit (GELS) 2025, a landmark international event that will be held in Puri from December 5 to 7 next year. Designed as a high-level platform for collaborative dialogue and action, the Summit aims to shape India’s long-term energy roadmap by bringing together policymakers, global experts, and industry leaders.

The event was launched with the unveiling of its logo—symbolising harmony between nature and innovation—by Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik, in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo. The official website, gelsodisha2025.com, was also introduced, offering details on the Summit’s structure, themes, and participants.

The overarching theme for GELS 2025, “Powering India: Sufficiency, Balance, Innovation,” reflects three core pillars of India’s evolving energy needs: ensuring sufficient and reliable power supply, balancing environmental priorities with economic aspirations, and accelerating innovation-driven solutions.

The Summit will serve as a convening ground for Union and State Energy Ministers, Secretaries, international thought leaders, researchers, and industry innovators. It aims to foster a national and global dialogue on the challenges and opportunities confronting India in meeting its rising power demand while staying committed to sustainability and technological progress.

A wide range of strategic issues will be discussed during the three-day event. These include boosting the reliability and security of India’s energy supply chain, ensuring ecological concerns are integrated into growth plans, and accelerating the energy transition through cutting-edge technologies. Discussions will cover emerging solutions such as small modular nuclear reactors, digital security in power grids, clean hydrogen adoption, and advanced renewable integration.

GELS 2025 is being organised in collaboration with the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK). It marks the first initiative of its kind in India involving coordinated participation from multiple states, drawing inspiration from similar global forums facilitated by TBI in Latin America and Africa.

Union Minister Shripad Yesso Naik called the Summit a crucial step toward advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for sustainable development and cooperative federalism. “Energy sufficiency is not merely about meeting demand—it is about ensuring reliability, resilience and long-term security. GELS will play an important role in India’s journey toward Net Zero by 2070,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo said Odisha takes pride in hosting an event of such global scale. “GELS 2025 aims to create a community of practice among Energy Ministers. By sharing knowledge and learning from each other, states can convert innovation into on-ground transformation,” he noted. Singh Deo emphasised that the Summit will move beyond discussion. “Every session will end with clear, actionable outcomes—roadmaps, toolkits, and measurable targets.”

The state has extended invitations to Energy Ministers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Bhutan, who are expected to attend. Leading international experts, including Gareth Walsh and Pierre Noel from the Tony Blair Institute, will also participate, along with several domestic and global think tanks.

With GELS 2025, Odisha positions itself at the forefront of India’s energy transition efforts, offering a collaborative space for states and countries to chart a shared pathway toward innovation-driven, sustainable energy systems. The Summit is expected not only to deepen policy dialogue but also to catalyse concrete steps that can shape India’s energy future for decades to come.
