Odisha Plans State-of-the-Art Science City in Bhubaneswar

Project aims to boost scientific learning, innovation, and research
Bhubaneswar : The Odisha government has initiated steps to establish a modern Science City in Bhubaneswar, signaling a major leap in the state’s efforts to promote scientific education, research, and innovation. The Department of Science and Technology has begun groundwork for the ambitious project, which will be developed over 100 acres in the capital city.
Minister Studies Models in Other States
Science and Technology Minister Krushna Chandra Patra has taken a hands-on approach to shaping the project. As part of his preparation, he recently visited the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Science City in Patna to study its infrastructure, design, and functioning. During the visit, he interacted with Bihar Deputy Chief Ministers Vijay Kumar Sinha and Samrat Choudhary to exchange ideas on best practices for developing such large-scale science infrastructure. The minister emphasized that Odisha’s Science City will adopt a futuristic model that combines education, research, and public engagement.
A Hub for Scientific Engagement
According to officials, the proposed Science City will feature advanced exhibition halls, immersive learning zones, and specialized pavilions showcasing innovations in space, robotics, biotechnology, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence. The project will also house interactive displays, science parks, and digital learning laboratories to attract students, researchers, and the general public. Authorities believe the initiative will inspire curiosity among young learners and provide them with exposure to the latest advancements in science and technology.
Research and Innovation Facilities
Beyond exhibitions, the Science City is expected to host state-of-the-art research facilities and innovation labs. These centers will provide platforms for young scientists, entrepreneurs, and innovators to develop ideas and collaborate on projects. Officials said the aim is to create a vibrant ecosystem that promotes scientific inquiry while also contributing to the state’s knowledge economy. The project is also expected to draw collaborations with national institutions, universities, and industries.
High-Level Committee for Planning
To ensure the smooth execution of the project, the government has decided to set up a high-level committee comprising senior officials, architects, and subject experts. Minister Patra said that technical experts from Bihar, who played a key role in the successful execution of Patna’s Science City, will also be invited to share their experience and guidance. This collaborative approach, he added, will help Odisha avoid common challenges and adopt the most effective construction and operational strategies.
Boost to Bhubaneswar’s Knowledge Hub Status
Bhubaneswar, already recognized as a growing education and IT hub, is expected to benefit immensely from the establishment of the Science City. With premier institutions like IIT Bhubaneswar, AIIMS, NISER, and the Institute of Physics located in the city, the new project is set to complement existing infrastructure. Experts believe the Science City will strengthen Bhubaneswar’s position as a center of learning and innovation in eastern India.
Public Outreach and Tourism Potential
Apart from academic benefits, the Science City is also expected to emerge as a major attraction for tourists and knowledge-seekers. With a focus on interactive displays and engaging experiences, it will cater not only to students but also to families and visitors from across the country. Officials expect that the Science City will draw both domestic and international tourists, thereby contributing to Odisha’s cultural and educational tourism profile.
A Step Toward Scientific Future
The proposed Science City represents a milestone in Odisha’s commitment to promoting science and technology. By integrating education, research, innovation, and public engagement under one roof, the project aims to create a lasting impact on society. While the timeline for completion is yet to be announced, preliminary planning has already begun, and the government’s intent is to fast-track the process.
Minister Patra expressed confidence that the project will inspire the younger generation to pursue careers in science and innovation. “This Science City will not only be a center of knowledge but also a symbol of Odisha’s aspiration to lead in scientific progress,” he said.
