Odisha Govt Unveils ₹7,000 Crore Plan to Ease Traffic in Capital

Bhubaneswar is set for a major infrastructure overhaul as the Odisha government announced a ₹7,000 crore investment to tackle traffic congestion, expand roads, and improve connectivity in the state capital. The decision was made during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Lok Seva Bhavan on Friday.
Key Infrastructure Projects
As part of the ambitious plan, a 64 km-long inner ring road will be developed, connecting Tamando to Paikrapur and Dhauli to Tamando with six-lane roads. Additionally, a 148 km-long outer ring road has been proposed, featuring six lanes and two service roads. The ₹6,152 crore project is expected to enhance the city’s expansion and ease traffic movement.
A new elevated corridor will be built between Jayadev Vihar and Nandankanan, alongside several other key road developments, including:
- Daya West Canal Road from Patia Square to Suanga Mouza.
- Sundarpada to Jatni road widening project.
- Three new flyovers at Kalpana, Museum, and Sishu Bhavan Square.
- Underpass construction at AG Square.
Additionally, work is ongoing on a left parallel road from the Institute of Mathematics through Patharagadia, Utkal Hospital, Rail Vihar up to Ekamra Kanan. Plans are also in place for right access roads connecting Damana to Press Square, Kala Rahanga to Barimunda, and Kelucharan Park to Barimunda.
Among these, the Damana Square to Press Square access road has been completed, while construction on the Sundarpada-Jatni road and left parallel road is progressing. The chief minister directed officials to finalize detailed project reports for the remaining works at the earliest.
Grand Ring Road and Temple Renovation
In addition to the Bhubaneswar projects, the government is working on a 287 km-long grand ring road connecting four corners of Odisha, featuring four tunnels between Berhampur and Jeypore.
The meeting also discussed an ₹214 crore project for the renovation and beautification of Ma Tarini temple in Keonjhar, along with infrastructure upgrades in Barbil and Bhubaneswar’s Unit-II area.
Chief Minister Majhi emphasized the need for timely completion of all projects, urging officials to expedite work. The meeting was attended by Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Development Commissioner Anu Garg, and other senior officials.
These projects are expected to transform Bhubaneswar’s urban landscape, improve traffic flow, and support the city’s long-term growth.
