The Odisha government is working towards increasing the social security pensions for persons with disabilities, widows, and senior citizens to ₹3,000 per month, announced Minister Nityananda Gond on Tuesday.

Gond, the Minister of Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, stated that efforts are underway to estimate the budgetary requirements for this significant hike. “We are currently assessing the financial implications of this increase,” he said. Additionally, clearance from the Finance Department will be required to implement the proposed pension hike, he added.

In February, the previous Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government had increased the pension by ₹500. Consequently, the different categories of beneficiaries are currently receiving ₹1,000, ₹1,200, and ₹1,400 per month. The proposed increase to ₹3,000 per month would mark a substantial improvement in the social security net for these vulnerable groups.

The scheme, known as the Madhu Babu Pension Yojana, supports a wide range of beneficiaries, including the elderly, widows, persons with disabilities, unmarried women, AIDS patients, transgender individuals, and orphaned children from families affected by COVID-19.

This move underscores the new government’s commitment to enhancing social welfare and support for those in need, reflecting a broader focus on inclusive development and social security in the state.

This increase aligns with the government’s broader efforts to improve social security measures and ensure financial stability for vulnerable populations. The proposed hike to ₹3,000 is expected to provide significant relief and support to these groups, enhancing their quality of life and financial independence.
