Odisha Extends e-KYC Deadline for Ration Card Holders Until March 31

In a significant relief for lakhs of ration card holders in Odisha, the state government has extended the deadline for completing e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) under the food security program until March 31, 2025. The decision comes as a response to widespread network connectivity issues in remote and rural areas, which have hindered many beneficiaries from completing the mandatory process.
Government’s Rationale for Extension
The announcement was made by Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra on Saturday, who highlighted the pressing challenges faced by residents in certain parts of the state. According to him, nearly 30 lakh beneficiaries have yet to update their e-KYC due to poor network coverage and slow internet speeds.
“Recognizing the difficulties faced by people in remote areas, we have decided to extend the deadline. This additional time will allow all beneficiaries to complete the process without any inconvenience and ensure they continue receiving their ration benefits uninterrupted,” Patra stated.
Current Status of e-KYC Completion
Despite the connectivity issues, 90% of ration card holders have already completed their e-KYC verification. The minister also revealed that a significant number of ineligible beneficiaries have voluntarily surrendered their ration cards. This move is in line with the government’s efforts to ensure that only deserving households benefit from the food security scheme.
State’s Plan to Improve Network Connectivity
To address the underlying connectivity problems, the Odisha government is undertaking major network upgrades. As part of this initiative, new network-boosting devices are being deployed across 341 locations in the state.
At present, 230 locations have no internet connectivity, making it impossible for residents to update their e-KYC.
An additional 111 areas suffer from slow internet speeds, further complicating the verification process.
By setting up network infrastructure in these regions, the government aims to enhance digital accessibility and ensure that all beneficiaries can complete the e-KYC process seamlessly.
Warning Against Misuse of Ration Cards
Alongside extending the deadline, the minister issued a stern warning to ineligible beneficiaries who are still holding on to their ration cards. He urged them to surrender their cards voluntarily to avoid any legal consequences.
“We are committed to maintaining transparency in the food security program. Those who continue to misuse their ration cards despite being ineligible will face strict action,” Patra warned.
Why e-KYC is Important for Food Security
The e-KYC process is a crucial part of Odisha’s food security program, ensuring that only genuine and deserving beneficiaries receive subsidized food grains. By linking ration cards to Aadhaar and biometric authentication, the government aims to:
- Eliminate fraudulent claims and duplicate ration cards.
- Ensure efficient distribution of food supplies to needy families.
- Prevent leakages and pilferage in the public distribution system (PDS).
- Streamline benefits for economically weaker sections of society.
Next Steps for Ration Card Holders
With the deadline extended until March 31, 2025, eligible beneficiaries who have not yet updated their e-KYC are advised to do so at the earliest to avoid last-minute issues.
For those facing connectivity challenges, the government’s network enhancement measures should provide better accessibility in the coming months. Beneficiaries can visit their nearest ration centers, Common Service Centers (CSCs), or online portals to complete their verification.
The extension of the e-KYC deadline underscores the Odisha government’s commitment to inclusive governance and ensuring food security for all deserving citizens, especially those in remote areas facing digital accessibility challenges.
