Minister Sets November Deadline for Sundarpada–Jatani Road Project
Minister reviews progress, asks officials to resolve drainage and utility issues alongside construction
Bhubaneswar : Public Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan conducted a detailed review of the Sundarpada–Jatani road construction project, which has been long awaited by residents and commuters in the region. The meeting, attended by departmental officials, the chief engineer, contractors, and local representatives, focused on accelerating the pace of work and overcoming hurdles.
During the review, the minister stressed that the project holds strategic importance for connectivity in the capital region. To ensure timely progress, Harichandan directed officials to complete the road construction by the end of November. He also asked for a comprehensive action plan that includes regular monitoring and accountability from contractors.
Four-Lane Expansion to Ease Traffic
The Sundarpada–Jatani road, measuring 13.5 km in length, is being expanded into a four-lane thoroughfare. Officials noted that once completed, the widened road will ease congestion, reduce travel time, and strengthen connectivity between Bhubaneswar and Jatani, a growing hub of educational and industrial activities.
With Jatani serving as a major link to institutions like IIT Bhubaneswar, NISER, and several upcoming residential projects, the expansion is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters. The project will also help divert traffic from the busy Bhubaneswar–Khurda stretch, offering a smoother alternative route.
Addressing Ancillary Challenges
Minister Harichandan highlighted that road projects of this scale often encounter challenges beyond construction, such as drainage, sewage, and shifting of electricity poles. He directed the engineers and contractors to address these ancillary issues simultaneously rather than sequentially, to avoid delays.
“Road development must go hand-in-hand with proper drainage and utility planning, otherwise the project risks recurring problems in the future,” the minister said. He assured local residents that their concerns regarding waterlogging and safety will also be factored into the execution.
Boost to Local Development
Government officials said the project is not just about improving transportation but also about boosting local development. With better road infrastructure, areas along the Sundarpada–Jatani corridor are expected to witness growth in real estate, small businesses, and public services.
A government statement added that the road will improve access for villagers and urban commuters alike, creating new opportunities for trade and easier connectivity to educational institutions, hospitals, and markets.
Locals Express Optimism
Locals who attended the review meeting expressed optimism that the project will bring long-term benefits but urged authorities to ensure quality construction. Several residents highlighted the need for durable drainage systems to prevent flooding during monsoons, an issue that has previously affected traffic along the route.
Contractors present at the meeting assured that work would be carried out on a war-footing to meet the November deadline. They also promised coordination with electricity and water departments to ensure smoother execution.
Push for Timely Completion
Harichandan, known for his emphasis on accountability, warned contractors against unnecessary delays and directed officials to conduct frequent inspections. “The project must reflect both speed and quality. The public has waited long enough for this development,” he said.
Officials confirmed that weekly progress reports will now be submitted directly to the minister’s office to track the pace of construction. Any deviation from the schedule will be reviewed and corrective measures taken immediately.
