Land Acquisition for ₹40,000 Cr Steel Plant in Keonjhar to Begin Soon: Odisha CM

Mega Project by JSW-POSCO to Boost Local Economy and Job Creation

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday announced that land acquisition for a proposed ₹40,000-crore mega steel plant in Keonjhar district will begin shortly, marking a significant milestone in Odisha’s industrial development.

The project is a joint venture between the Indian conglomerate JSW Group and South Korean steel giant POSCO. With an initial production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the plant is expected to transform Keonjhar into a key industrial hub in eastern India.

“The process is in an advanced stage. Land has been identified, and the company has already deposited the required funds. Preparations are underway,” said CM Majhi during his visit to the district.

Two sites—Taramakant and Patna—have been earmarked for land acquisition. The Chief Minister emphasized that the upcoming steel plant will bring substantial economic benefits to the mineral-rich district, including direct and indirect employment opportunities, particularly for local youth.

Calling the steel plant a “personal mission,” Majhi highlighted the state government’s unwavering focus on infrastructure and industrial growth in Keonjhar, known for its vast reserves of iron ore and other minerals.

As part of his visit, the Chief Minister chaired a district-level review meeting, engaging with local MLAs and officials to assess the progress of various development projects. He urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure the timely execution of the plant and other key initiatives.

Majhi also flagged off three new ambulances and a coconut collection vehicle under the ‘Maa Tarini’ initiative, a local welfare program linked to the revered Ghatagaon shrine. These efforts, he said, reflect the government’s commitment to both industrial and social development in the region.

Reassuring the public, CM Majhi added, “There is no shortage of funds for Keonjhar’s development. From national highway expansion to other critical infrastructure projects, we are fully committed to fast-tracking progress.”

The steel plant, once operational, is expected to not only drive economic growth in Keonjhar but also contribute significantly to Odisha’s overall industrial output, reinforcing the state’s position as a major destination for global investment in the steel sector.
