300-bed hospital inaugurated; ₹41.17 crore welfare scheme launched for kendu leaf workers

In a significant push to enhance healthcare infrastructure and livelihood support in western Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday unveiled a package of developmental projects worth ₹205 crore during a high-impact visit to Deogarh district. The visit, which underscored the state government’s focus on inclusive growth and welfare-centric governance, saw the inauguration and foundation-laying of 15 major projects aimed at long-term regional transformation.

A key highlight was the inauguration of a modern 300-bed hospital, designed to bridge the healthcare gap in Deogarh and surrounding areas. The facility is expected to provide critical medical services to thousands of residents who previously had limited access to advanced healthcare infrastructure.

Alongside infrastructure development, Chief Minister Majhi also announced a ₹41.17 crore financial assistance package targeted at Odisha’s kendu leaf workforce—a vital segment of the state’s forest-based economy. The scheme will benefit around 9 lakh kendu leaf pluckers, binders, and seasonal staff across the state, offering direct support in the form of work-related essentials. Each kendu leaf plucker will receive ₹160 for slippers, ₹200 for storage cloth, and ₹100 for protective hats. Binders will be allotted ₹700 each for mosquito nets and blankets.

“This initiative is not just about financial support—it is a reflection of our government’s resolve to uplift the working class, especially those in remote, forest-dependent communities,” CM Majhi stated while addressing a public gathering in Deogarh. He assured that the welfare of the state’s most vulnerable citizens remains central to the government’s policy agenda.

The Chief Minister reiterated his administration’s vision for balanced development across all 30 districts of Odisha. “Deogarh has immense untapped potential, and our goal is to ensure that every block and village is brought into the mainstream of Odisha’s growth journey,” he said.

Majhi emphasized that strategic investments in healthcare, livelihoods, and infrastructure are not only about current needs but are foundational to building a resilient and equitable Odisha. Today’s announcements are expected to significantly uplift living standards and economic prospects in the region.

Local communities welcomed the initiatives, calling it a milestone moment for Deogarh, which has long awaited targeted investments. The newly inaugurated hospital and welfare measures for kendu leaf workers are seen as tangible outcomes of a governance model grounded in grassroots impact and regional parity.
