Calderys to Set Up World’s Largest Refractory and Flux Plant in Khordha

Company to invest ₹698.71 crore; facility to become operational in 2025, creating 350 jobs by 2026

Bhubaneswar: Global refractory manufacturing leader Calderys is establishing the world’s largest refractory and flux manufacturing facility in Khordha district of Odisha. The announcement was made by Ish Mohan Garg, Senior Vice President of Calderys for the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, during an interaction with the media. The mega facility is expected to become operational in 2025.

According to Garg, this upcoming unit will be the largest single-location refractory and flux plant in the world. Once commissioned, it will not only cater to the industrial requirements of eastern and southern India but also serve international markets, including Southeast Asia.

The project has already received approval from the State-Level Single Window Clearance Authority in September last year, paving the way for fast-tracked execution.

The Khordha plant is being set up on a sprawling 40-acre land parcel and will house five dedicated production lines. These lines will manufacture a wide variety of refractory and flux products, including:

* Acidic and basic refractory bricks
* Monolithic refractories
* Ready-shaped refractories
* Steel casting fluxes

This wide product portfolio is designed to support industries such as steel, cement, and non-ferrous metallurgy, which depend heavily on refractory solutions for high-temperature processes.

Calderys has designed the Khordha facility with a strong focus on environmental stewardship and sustainable industrial practices.

The plant will feature:

* Zero effluent discharge system to ensure no untreated water is released into the environment.
* Rainwater harvesting infrastructure to promote water conservation.
* Air quality control mechanisms to minimize emissions.
* A 33 percent green belt zone within the plant premises to enhance ecological balance.

“These features underline Calderys’ commitment to creating an environmentally responsible and future-ready industrial facility,” Garg said.

The project represents a total investment of ₹698.71 crore. Beyond strengthening Odisha’s industrial base, it will also bring significant socio-economic benefits.

By 2026, the facility is expected to generate 350 direct employment opportunities, apart from creating indirect livelihood prospects through allied services, logistics, and ancillary units.

The company believes the Khordha plant will contribute meaningfully to Odisha’s vision of becoming a hub for advanced manufacturing in eastern India.

India, being one of the fastest-growing steel producers, has a rising demand for refractory materials. Calderys’ Khordha facility is positioned to address this growing requirement while also supplying products to export markets.

“With its scale and technological capabilities, this plant will be a cornerstone in meeting refractory needs for industries in eastern and southern India, while simultaneously serving Southeast Asia’s expanding markets,” Garg noted.

The establishment of this plant underscores Odisha’s attractiveness as a destination for large-scale industrial investments. With deep-water ports, mineral availability, and supportive state policies, Odisha continues to attract global manufacturing giants.

State officials have welcomed the project as a milestone investment that will not only enhance Odisha’s industrial ecosystem but also create sustainable economic opportunities for the local community.

As construction progresses, the Calderys refractory and flux plant in Khordha is poised to become a global benchmark for scale, sustainability, and advanced manufacturing. With commissioning scheduled for 2025 and full employment opportunities expected by 2026, the project is set to reinforce Odisha’s growing reputation as a powerhouse of industrial growth in eastern India.
