Bhubaneswar to Host World-Class Stadium by 2029

Odisha’s four-year sports plan targets local talent development and international event hosting
Bhubaneswar : Bhubaneswar is set to witness the construction of a world-class stadium worth ₹1,000 crore, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced. The project is a key component of a larger ₹4,124-crore sports infrastructure development plan aimed at transforming Odisha into one of India’s leading sports hubs over the next four years.
The announcement was made during the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze 2025 event at Kalinga Stadium, where CM Majhi underlined the government’s commitment to fostering sports excellence. “Today is a proud day for Odisha,” he declared, recalling the state’s successful hosting of the Hockey World Cup twice. “Our government is dedicated to ensuring that athletes have access to the highest quality facilities, enabling them to compete at national and international levels.”
The ₹4,124-crore plan will span 14 blocks across the state, each receiving state-of-the-art facilities designed to meet global standards. The initiative aims to nurture local talent, provide modern training environments, and create opportunities for athletes from grassroots to elite levels. The Bhubaneswar stadium, expected to be a centerpiece of this transformation, will be equipped for multiple sports disciplines, spectator amenities, and high-performance training centers.
Sunday’s event, the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze, brought together young athletes from over 15 countries. Jointly organised by the Athletics Federation of India and the Sports & Youth Services Department, it showcased emerging talent and Odisha’s capability to host major international sports events. CM Majhi noted that the successful organisation of such tournaments enhances Odisha’s global profile and paves the way for bigger opportunities.
He specifically mentioned the goal of securing the hosting rights for the Continental Tour Gold, one of the most prestigious competitions in athletics. “We are confident that Odisha’s proven track record, coupled with our investment in infrastructure, will make us a preferred destination for top-tier events,” he said.
Sports analysts have welcomed the government’s vision, pointing out that Odisha has already carved a niche for itself in disciplines like hockey, athletics, and weightlifting. The new infrastructure plan is expected to further strengthen these areas while promoting emerging sports. Additionally, it is likely to boost sports tourism, local employment, and related industries.
The government has indicated that the stadium in Bhubaneswar will incorporate modern sustainability features, including eco-friendly materials, renewable energy systems, and water conservation technologies. Such measures align with the state’s broader goal of building environmentally responsible infrastructure.
In recent years, Odisha’s commitment to sports has been evident through investments in training academies, partnerships with national and international sports bodies, and support for athlete welfare programs. With the upcoming projects, the state hopes to create a robust ecosystem that supports athletes from their formative years to their professional peak.
The announcement has also generated excitement among the sporting community, with many athletes expressing optimism about the opportunities these facilities will create. Coaches and sports administrators believe that access to world-class infrastructure within the state will reduce the need for athletes to train elsewhere, keeping talent rooted in Odisha.
As the four-year development plan unfolds, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the projects are implemented and how they contribute to Odisha’s ambitions. For now, the vision is clear: to position the state not just as a participant in India’s sports story, but as a leading chapter in it.
