Bhubaneswar Bypass Project Gets Centre’s Nod: CM Majhi Thanks PM Modi, Nitin Gadkari

Bhubaneswar is set to witness a transformative infrastructure boost with the Centre approving a ₹8,307.74 crore 6-lane Capital Region Ring Road project to decongest urban traffic and accelerate Odisha’s economic growth.
Bhubaneswar : Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari after the Centre approved the long-awaited Bhubaneswar Bypass project. The project, formally sanctioned by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), involves constructing a six-lane, access-controlled Capital Region Ring Road spanning 110.875 kilometres at a total cost of ₹8,307.74 crore.
“I extend my sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for this historic approval. The 6-lane Bhubaneswar Bypass will be a game-changer for Odisha, strengthening connectivity, decongesting cities, and paving the way for economic prosperity,” Chief Minister Majhi said in a statement.
The Bhubaneswar Bypass, designed under Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), will provide seamless connectivity by integrating with three major National Highways (NH-55, NH-57, and NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65). Officials said the project is strategically aligned to connect key industrial clusters, logistics hubs, and urban centres, ensuring smoother traffic flow and faster cargo movement.
The upgraded corridor is expected to decongest the capital city and neighbouring towns, improving travel efficiency for lakhs of commuters while also cutting down vehicular pollution.
The project’s economic benefits extend far beyond transport efficiency. According to estimates, the Bhubaneswar Bypass construction will generate approximately 74.43 lakh person-days of direct employment and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment.
State officials noted that apart from immediate job opportunities, the project would spur long-term economic growth in the region by attracting investment, improving access to markets, and boosting real estate and industrial development along the corridor.
The new ring road will connect with 10 Economic Nodes, 4 Social Nodes, and 5 Logistic Nodes, significantly enhancing Odisha’s multimodal transport network. It will link to a major railway station, the Biju Patnaik International Airport, a proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), and two major ports.
“This is not just a road project; it is an infrastructure revolution that will integrate rail, road, port, and air connectivity for Odisha,” a senior official from the Works Department said.
Experts believe the Bhubaneswar Bypass will also serve as a critical regional connector for eastern India, providing faster and more efficient transit routes for goods moving between Odisha and neighbouring states. The corridor will also help balance traffic distribution on existing highways, reducing bottlenecks and accidents.
By strengthening Odisha’s logistics backbone, the project is expected to improve the competitiveness of key sectors such as mining, steel, aluminium, textiles, and agriculture, thereby giving a major push to the state’s economy.
While welcoming the Centre’s approval, Chief Minister Majhi also urged officials to ensure timely and quality execution of the project. “This is a golden opportunity to transform Odisha’s transport infrastructure. We must ensure that the project is executed with efficiency and transparency, delivering maximum benefits to the people,” he said.
The Bhubaneswar Bypass project marks one of the biggest highway investments in Odisha to date. It is expected to redefine urban mobility in the capital region, ease traffic congestion, and act as a catalyst for industrial and economic growth.
With multimodal integration, job creation, and regional development at its core, the project stands as a symbol of Odisha’s growing importance in India’s infrastructure expansion plans.
