BHEL Secures ₹6,650-Crore NTPC Order for Odisha Thermal Power Project

1×800 MW Darlipali Stage-II Unit to Boost State’s Power Infrastructure

Bhubaneswar: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has bagged a major contract from NTPC Limited for developing the 1×800 MW Darlipali Supercritical Thermal Power Project, Stage-II, in Sundargarh district of Odisha. The company announced that it received the Notification of Award (NOA) for the project, valued at over ₹6,650 crore (excluding GST), under international competitive bidding.

According to BHEL’s regulatory filing, the project will be executed on a turnkey Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis. This includes design, engineering, procurement, supply, civil construction, erection, and commissioning of the plant. The completion timeline is set at 48 months from the award date—6 November 2025.

Located near the existing Darlipali Stage-I plant, the upcoming 800 MW unit is expected to strengthen Odisha’s power generation capacity and support the state’s growing industrial and household electricity demands. Sundargarh district, which hosts several large industrial clusters, already depends heavily on thermal power supplied through central and state generating stations.

BHEL’s latest win further deepens its long-standing partnership with NTPC, India’s largest power producer. The two organisations have collaborated for decades on high-capacity thermal power projects across the country. The new order reinforces BHEL’s position as one of the leading EPC players in India’s thermal power sector, even as the company continues to diversify into renewable and emerging energy technologies.

This development comes just weeks after BHEL secured another large-scale order in Madhya Pradesh. On 29 September, the company received a Notification of Award from MP Power Generating Company Limited for EPC packages of the 1×660 MW Amarkantak Unit 6 and the 1×660 MW Satpura Unit 12 Supercritical Thermal Power Plants. Together, those projects were valued between ₹13,000 crore and ₹15,000 crore, excluding taxes and duties.

Taken together, these back-to-back high-value EPC contracts mark a significant revival in India’s thermal power expansion pipeline, even as renewable capacity additions continue nationwide. For Odisha, the Darlipali Stage-II project is expected to add critical baseload power, improve grid stability, and contribute to regional economic growth.

Construction activities for the project—ranging from equipment supply to major civil works—are expected to generate substantial local employment and create secondary economic opportunities in Sundargarh and adjoining districts.

With the order now awarded, BHEL will begin mobilising for pre-construction activities while NTPC initiates preparatory steps for site development and coordination with local authorities.
