AMNS India Becomes First to Secure License for Steel Slag Road Technology

Bhubaneswar : AMNS India has become the first company in India to receive a license for steel slag valorisation technology from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Central Road Research Institute (CSIR–CRRI). This technology replaces natural aggregates with scientifically processed steel slag in road construction, significantly improving durability and cost-efficiency.

AMNS India was granted the license titled ‘Steel Slag Valorization Technology for Development of Processed EAF Steel Slag Aggregates’ for its Hazira plant in Gujarat. This license allows the company to manufacture and supply processed steel slag aggregates specifically for road construction. The technology was developed by CSIR-CRRI under the Ministry of Science & Technology.

AMNS India currently produces engineered slag under the brand name ‘AM/NS Aakar’, which complies with CRRI’s strict quality standards. Roads constructed using these processed slag aggregates are 30–40% more cost-effective and last up to three times longer than conventional bitumen roads. These roads also require less maintenance and are ideal for diverse terrains, including coastal regions.

India produces over 19 million tonnes of steel slag annually, often underutilized and environmentally hazardous in raw form. The use of unprocessed slag in roads can compromise strength and sustainability. With the licensed technology, AMNS India can now process 1.7 million tonnes of slag generated annually into roadworthy material.

Dr. Satish Pandey, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR-CRRI and the technology’s inventor, said, “Steel slag road technology is a game-changer for India’s infrastructure. Untreated slag weakens road performance, but processed slag ensures strength, sustainability, and longevity.” He added that AM/NS India’s collaboration in building India’s first ‘all steel slag road’ in Hazira has laid the foundation for this scale-up.

Ranjan Dhar, Director and Vice President – Sales & Marketing at AMNS India, highlighted their role in building the world’s first one-kilometre, six-lane road made entirely from steel slag in Hazira. Recognised by the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records, this project reflects AMNS’s commitment to ‘Waste to Wealth’, supporting India’s circular economy.

Following the Hazira success, the world’s first coastal steel slag road was built inside a private port at Hazira, and another at NH-53 Diamond Bourse in Surat, both using AMNS Aakar aggregates. These roads demonstrate the increasing acceptance and technical feasibility of steel slag-based construction.

India is projected to generate 60 million tonnes of steel slag by FY 2030, as steel production capacity scales to 300 million tonnes annually. In anticipation, the Ministry of Steel, along with the Ministry of Science & Technology and Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, is promoting large-scale adoption of steel slag road technology.

By using industrial by-products like steel slag for road construction, India moves closer to achieving a \$2 trillion circular economy and 10 million new jobs by 2050. This initiative represents a synergy between environmental stewardship and infrastructure development.
