Aditya Aluminium Commissions Odisha’s First 200 KLD Zero Liquid Discharge Plant
Pioneering step in industrial water conservation and sustainable manufacturing
Bhubaneswar : Aditya Aluminium, a unit of Hindalco Industries, has commissioned Odisha’s first 200 KLD Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant at its facility in Hirakud, Sambalpur. The state-of-the-art facility is a major milestone in industrial water management, aimed at promoting sustainability through water recycling and reuse. The plant was inaugurated by Uma Nanduri, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Kendu Leaf) and Member Secretary of the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB).
The newly installed ZLD system uses advanced Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) technology to treat industrial wastewater. This technology functions by evaporating and condensing wastewater using recycled steam energy, allowing the recovery of nearly 90–95 per cent clean water for reuse within the plant. With this system, the facility ensures zero discharge of liquid effluents into the environment, significantly reducing its dependency on freshwater resources.
This eco-friendly initiative is aligned with government environmental norms and contributes towards Odisha’s broader efforts to promote sustainable industrial practices. The project, developed with an investment of approximately Rs 20 crore, reflects Hindalco’s commitment to sustainability, circular economy principles, and efficient resource utilization. The company has stated that the initiative supports its long-term goal of achieving water positivity across all operational units.
Speaking at the event, officials highlighted how the ZLD plant will not only help in reducing environmental impact but will also improve operational efficiency. The system’s ability to recycle treated water back into the industrial process is expected to significantly lower the plant’s overall water consumption, making it a model for other industries in the state.
Conservator of Forests, Sambalpur Kendu Leaf Circle, Sudarsan Behera, Aditya Aluminium unit head JP Nayak, CPP head Gulshan Tiwari, and smelter head Sandeep Singh were also present during the inauguration ceremony. They appreciated the company’s efforts in adopting environmentally responsible technologies that ensure both compliance and conservation.
Aditya Aluminium’s initiative marks a significant leap forward for Odisha’s industrial sector in terms of sustainable water management. It sets a benchmark for other manufacturing units across the state to embrace green technologies and reduce their ecological footprint. With increasing emphasis on conservation of natural resources, such initiatives are expected to support Odisha’s vision of sustainable industrial growth.
This development not only strengthens the company’s environmental credentials but also showcases Odisha as a state encouraging innovation in clean and responsible industry practices.
