CM Mohan Majhi Reviews Godabarish Mishra Adarsha Prathamika Vidyalaya Scheme

Odisha to establish 835 model schools with focus on foundational literacy, STEM, and inclusive education

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Majhi on Monday held a high-level review meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan to discuss the progress and implementation of the Godabarish Mishra Adarsha Prathamika Vidyalaya Scheme, a flagship initiative aimed at transforming primary education in Odisha. The CM announced the creation of 835 Adarsha (Model) Schools across the state as part of the effort to strengthen the education system from the grassroots level.

These new Adarsha Schools will function as feeder schools for existing high schools, laying a strong academic foundation for students from pre-primary (Shishu Vatika) up to Class 8. Each school will receive financial support of up to Rs 7 crore from the state government for infrastructure development, technological integration, and other necessary upgrades.

During the review, the Chief Minister emphasized that schools with more than 100 students, minimum 2 acres of available land, and classes from Shishu Vatika to Class 8 will be prioritized for transformation into Adarsha Schools. These institutions will be established preferably in every Gram Panchayat headquarters, ensuring wider accessibility and geographical balance.

Focus on Inclusive and Equitable Education

The Chief Minister underlined the importance of equity in education, especially for students from remote and underprivileged backgrounds. He directed officials to arrange free transportation facilities for students traveling from far-off areas, so that no child is left behind due to logistical barriers.

Majhi also stressed the need to beautify schools using modern technology and to recruit qualified teachers to maintain quality standards. He urged departmental Secretaries and officials to take swift and strategic actions to operationalize the scheme effectively.

Aligning with National Education Policy 2020

The Adarsha Vidyalayas will be developed in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Special attention will be paid to ensure foundational literacy and numeracy for students up to Class 3. The schools will also introduce STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, vocational training, and experiential learning methods aimed at nurturing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Chief Minister mentioned that inputs from stakeholders—including parents, alumni, and community leaders—will be sought to ensure the model schools reflect local needs and aspirations.

Vision for the Future

These Adarsha Schools are not just infrastructure upgrades but are envisioned as a transformational change in Odisha’s foundational education system. The government plans to upgrade these schools to high schools in the future based on their performance and infrastructure capacity.

“By investing in strong foundational learning and leveraging technology, we aim to create a future-ready generation of students who are not only academically strong but also socially and emotionally resilient,” said CM Majhi during the meeting.

With the launch of this large-scale educational initiative, Odisha is taking a significant step towards universal access to quality education, bridging the urban-rural divide, and setting the foundation for a more inclusive and empowered society.
