Rs 2000 Crore Railway Wheelset Plant Takes Shape in Odisha

New facility to create 3,600 jobs and boost India’s rail manufacturing power
Construction has officially started on a major railway wheelset manufacturing plant at Haldiapada in Khordha district. The high-tech unit is being developed by Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory (JTRF), a subsidiary of Jupiter Wagons Limited, with an investment of over Rs 2,000 crore.
Spread across 86 acres, the plant is expected to be ready by 2027. Once it becomes operational, it will produce 1 lakh wheelsets, 2 lakh forged discs, and 1 lakh axles every year. The facility aims to meet the growing needs of Indian Railways, and about 50 percent of its production will also be exported to Europe and North America.
The factory is being designed with the latest Industry 4.0 technologies to ensure smart and efficient manufacturing. It will be a fully automated, eco-friendly facility featuring rooftop solar panels, the use of clean fuels like LNG and CNG, and a closed-loop water recycling system. These green features will make it a zero-discharge plant, aligning with sustainable development goals.
Sudip Haldar, Chief Technology Officer of JTRF, shared that this project is a major step toward reducing India’s dependence on imported railway components. It will also support the country’s goal of increasing its railway freight handling capacity from the current 1,500 million tonnes to over 3,000 million tonnes by 2030.
In addition to strengthening the railway manufacturing sector, the plant will create a significant number of job opportunities. Around 3,600 direct and indirect jobs are expected to be generated once the unit is fully operational.
This project marks a key milestone in Odisha’s industrial growth and contributes to the central government’s “Make in India” mission. With its focus on advanced manufacturing and sustainability, the plant is set to become a model for future industrial development in the country.
Local authorities and industry leaders are hopeful that this development will not only boost the regional economy but also help position Odisha as a hub for high-quality railway manufacturing in the coming years.
